Golegã National Horse Fair 2025
by Samantha Dawn Equine Photography
SEE FULL GALLERY HERE
We made our way to the Golegã National Horse Fair, a place I've heard talked about in every corner of the equine world. Golegã itself is a small town about an hour and a half from Lisbon (Portugal), but it holds a title far bigger than its cobbled streets: Capital do Cavalo: the capital of the horse.
For ten days each year in November, this quiet place swells into a living tapestry of tradition, artistry and pure love for the horse. I’ve dreamed of walking into this fair for years... a lifelong admirer of the Lusitano, as someone shaped and sharpened by horses and as an artist who draws breath and inspiration from them.
I'm not even really sure how to describe Golegã. It’s a microcosm of humanity and horseflesh, thousands upon thousands of both (not kidding), moving in every direction. The energy just hangs in the air. You can feel it on your skin. Every sense is being used.
Photographing it, though? Picture the most crowded concert you’ve ever been to… shoulder to shoulder, no room to breathe. Now multiply that by twenty and add horses to the mix. It's both madness and inspiring.
Then you remember...everyone is there for one thing: The Horse.
The streets flood with people; the streets flood with horses; the celebration becomes one continuous river of movement. I honestly probably could have taken more photos too...but the sheer number of people...does present more challenges to photograph than you'd think. Photographing around people when you're trying to hurry up and frame up an image and they walk in front - it's really hard to capture images. It was a challenge that I happily jumped into though - I like a challenge! lol.
At the center of it all lies the iconic manga, the outer arena where riders glide through in traditional costume and also those who just come to ride ang enjoy the atmosphere. Within that, the inner arena hums with competitions, beautiful displays and performances from morning light to midnight. (Seriously- one of the show jumping shows didn't START until 9:30. Welcome to Europe where nighttime doesn't always mean sleep.)
For several days, the arena belonged to Working Equitation. I’m no stranger to the sport! I first photographed it in 2018 at the Andalusian World Cup in Las Vegas and I fell in love with its blend of precision and artistry. In this album, you’ll find moments from both the dressage phases and the obstacle challenges. You’ll see a little of everything that makes Golegã what it is: the public enjoying the fair, the public on horseback, the disciplined elegance of dressage riders, the focused electricity of Working Equitation athletes and even the Campinos - the traditional cattle horsemen of the Ribatejo with their long pikes as they guide cattle with centuries old skill. They are living threads of Portuguese history, still woven tightly into modern tradition.
As I share the images, I ask for something simple: kindness. Each culture holds its own history with horses... sometimes familiar, sometimes vastly different from what we see in America. Observing doesn’t mean policing... witnessing doesn’t require judgment. When you’re there, you see the beautiful and the imperfect in the same breath… and you learn to make quiet notes in your mind, then let them go and onto the next thought.
I hope my photographs carry the pulse of Golegã. If you're from PT reading this - Obrigado!
Feel free to SHARE! My work is copyrighted. It is not authorized for artistic references or any use without written permission. Samantha Dawn - Equine Photography

IBERICON Horse Spectacular Scores Big
with Record Attendance
by Tina Cristiani Veder
The stage was set, the lights were bright, and the crowd responded — over 1,800 guests filled the arena this year over the two-night performance, surpassing last season’s numbers and confirming that the IBERICON experience is more electric than ever.
The show kicked off with a stirring Flag Ceremony as Fred Win of Fred Win Horsemanship, dressed in full soldier regalia, slid and spun his Lusitano into the spotlight, sparking cheers from the fullhouse audience.
Next, the arena fell into a hush as Shawn Drentwett of Asteri Equine emerged on the majestic black Andalusian OMNI MC — wings lit up and moving with every gesture, soaring through all three gaits in breathtaking harmony with no hands on the reins. It was the kind of performance that leaves hearts racing and eyes wide.
Just before the Warrior Women entered, the arena came alive with a hypnotic display of flame and rhythm. Fire dancers wielding real fire fans moved in powerful unison, their blazing arcs slicing the darkness like ancient symbols of transformation. Their performance ignited the energy of the crowd and set the stage for the arrival of the Celtic-Iberian Warrior Women. Led by Yvonne Barteau and her KYB dressage team, the
Warrior Women quadrille that followed was fierce, and dramatic.
“Flamenco Dreams” told a story of aspiration and transformation. Two young girls, Marlee Molinari and Dana Sapp—best friends, one a rider and the other a dancer—brought to life their childhood dreams of becoming stars in their art forms. In Part 2, they returned as grown women: Aurora Quiel as a renowned Flamenco dancer and Shawn Drentwett as a celebrated Vaquera rider. Together, they performed with power, grace, and passion. The audience was visibly moved by this touching portrayal of friendship and fulfilled dreams.
In a shift of tone, Bruno Gonzalez and his magnificent PRE stallion Cartujano De Impaciente II transported everyone back to the elegant age of Baroque court riding. It was refined, majestic and utterly captivating.
The patriotic sparkle of Western Dressage arrived via Frances Carbonell and her Lusitano, Galileu, — decked in red, whiteand; blue, and riding to applause from a thrilled crowd they did a beautiful display of many movements used in Western Dressage.
Then the fun dial turned to full — Yvonne Barteau returned on Nadal de Sauseto a PRE Grand Prix horse from Spain along with Eva Farrell on Valkira Santana for “Rocky Reimagined,” trading their dressage shadbelly coats for boxer trunks in a playful pas de deux set to one of the most iconic soundtracks of all time. Laughter, energy and cheers filled the arena.
Next, the beat got even bolder as Christine and Shawn Drentwett teamed with live Latin singer/songwriter Sabazion Pereira for a double garrocha number that lit up the floor with rhythm, precision and fire.
Up next, the spotlight shone on Allegra Hart — who was a representative for the USA at the 2024 FEI Vaulting World Championships. What made her performance even more remarkable: Cartujano (Bruno’s PRE stallion from earlier) had only one week of training to become a vaulting horse! Accompanied live by Sabaztian Pereira performing his signature song “La Promesa,” the act became a moving testament to the
intelligence, grace, and soul of the Iberian horse.
For high-octane thrills, Shane Kuhn and his Rough Riders stormed the arena with a full-blown Wild West show—complete with fast riding, gunfire, trick roping, and daring Roman riding stunts. The crowd was on its feet, cheering as Shane’s fearless Andalusians performed flawlessly, unfazed by the thunder of gun blasts and the wild energy of the spectacle.
In a final burst of Latin flair, Shawn Drentwett and Dayron Pulido performed a pas de deux to a spicy upbeat track, with horses moving in perfect sync and the audience eating up every moment. The grand finale belonged to Yvonne Barteau riding the Spanish stallion “Papi,” to the poignant anthem “The Voice.”
Our great Narrator Tom Waite closed with the stirring lines:
“I am the voice of your history... Let that voice echo in your heart tonight—the voice of every horse who has carried us, taught us, healed us, and walked beside us. The voice that lives within us all.”
Thank you to every performer, every volunteer, the WEC and OPAV crew and every sponsor who made this year’s IBERICON Horse Spectacular a triumph. You brought magic, precision and heart to the arena — and I cannot wait to see where next year takes us. Heartfelt gratitude and deep affection to you all.

IBERICON Horse Spectacular

Adventure to IBERICON
by Lori Glazier
The anticipation I had was equal to a little kid getting ready to go to Disney World. The only difference is that I’m closer to being a senior citizen than a teenager. This trip was going to be the equivalent of a summer vacation: a break to get away from the 24/7 of a horse farm, the daily grind, the early mornings and the exhausted evenings. I was headed to sunny Florida with its warm temperatures and …..you guessed it- more horses. I guess being an equestrian is a type of addiction-if you are reading this then you know exactly what I mean.
We left Pennsylvania, drove all day ( because my husband watched too many episodes of Why Planes Crash), and decided to spend the night in northern Florida. Sleep was sparse and the morning anticipation was building as we began the final 2 hours of our journey to The World Equestrian Center.
The grandeur of WEC did not disappoint as we made our way through the huge stone gates and followed various signs to Arena 5. Did I mention there are 25 barns on the property? The road system was very reminiscent of Disney. There were black top roads, signs at every fork, beautiful sculptures, topiary, and metal lamp post. We found the correct arena and then had to make the decision of what to do first.
There were so many options- it was like going to Dunkin Donuts….. so much goodness that it was difficult to choose. My husband Curtis and I decided to drive around to get familiar with the premises. The facility consists of 378 acres, 23 outdoor arenas, 6 climate controlled indoor arenas, and nearly 3000 stalls.
Amongst all of this was The Equestrian Hotel, The Riding Academy Hotel, The Grand Stadium and stores in every nook and cranny. We decided to explore the Grand Equestrian Hotel first. We were met at the door by a doorman. As we entered, we noticed the sparkling chandeliers, lavish artwork, pristine furniture and a grand fireplace. Although there was vacancy at the 248 room establishment, I decided that I would rather sacrifice and stay at a cheaper hotel so that I would have more money for shopping. I eventually caught up with Susan Hart who pointed me in the direction of the classroom. I caught a few sessions before departing late afternoon.
Returning to Ibericon the next morning, I couldn’t decide what to do , there were so many choices: The Fiesta Ocala PRE show was in progress, there were presentations in the classrooms, demonstrations in the arenas. Vendors to explore and The Iberian Cup show. I immersed myself in everything Iberian then left again late afternoon to prepare for the Iberian Spectacular.
The Iberian Spectacular was scheduled for 7:30 so we made sure to arrive in good time. We sat at a table with some old friends and made some new friends. The show opened with a stirring patriotic number and was followed by the National Anthem ….it made you feel proud to be part of the USA.
The next performance could not be adequately captured by camera - you just had to be there. From out of the darkness came a dark Spanish horse embellished with wings that were lit in shades of blue. The skilled rider operated the wings with her hands as she guided the stunning steed by her seat……it was unforgettable. And then it was one spectacular performance after another. So much credit to Tina Cristiani Veder for her vision in collaborating such fabulous horses, riders, lighting and music. The Iberian Spectacular was worth the drive to Florida in of itself.
It was Saturday morning and time was traveling way too fast. My husband dropped me off at the barn and returned to the hotel. This was our daily routine. A vacation for him did not consist of being surrounded by horses….he had enough of them at home. His vacation consisted of watching movies, driving the countryside and eating good food——of which I did not complain. He’s a hard working dairy farmer and he deserved his rest. Meanwhile, I spent another day being a sponge and soaking up all the information, warmth and beauty that surrounded me. I left late afternoon for local tack store shopping, scenic driving and supper.
Sunday morning once again brought great anticipation for the last day of Ibericon. I was totally in awe watching the last day of the Fiesta show. I studied all the moves of the handlers and horses as I envisioned myself participating next year-all I need is the tack, the apparel and the horse!
One of my horses is on order from Spain and I was delighted to discover that the owner of the Spanish transport company would be at the show. Albert, owner of Fly and Company travelled to the states with his beautiful daughter. He was introducing her to the many facets of the company since she is interested in joining her dad in the profession. It’s really interesting meeting up with someone you have never seen or met before. We managed to find each other and Albert answered all my million questions and brought a sense of peace to my mind as I concluded my new horse is in very capable and professional hands. I had no sooner finished talking with Albert when my phone lit up. It was Luis. I had made friends with Luis over Facebook but never met him in person either. He brought a couple presentation halters for me to look at and choose from. Luis rides professionally and was at the show representing his clients. He travels the East coast so it was exciting to meet him in person.
The Iberian community has proven to be a circle of wonderful people. I finished my day early as I watched yet another new friend, Carlos, claim the Champion Mare title. It had been such a fantastic trip but there was one more element to be completed. We wanted to visit an old friend, Karen Jenkins. I had purchased horses from Karen at the height of her Music City Andalusian enterprise and she became somewhat of a mentor to me. We drove to her house, had a meal together and shared memories before departing for our drive northward.
Our journey was rich with old friends-too many to mention, new friends, new memories, beautiful horses, and a general overall good time. My next goals: Find some Spanish tack and attire……….off to the next adventure!

IBERICON: More than A Competition
by Lily Forado
Last week, IBERICON made its long-awaited return at the World Equestrian Center (WEC) with a brand-new concept. From Thursday to Sunday, Arena 5 featured not just a celebration of the Iberian horse, but a diverse and ambitious program combining educational activities, networking, entertainment and competition.
Fiesta Ocala, the conformation show welcomed around 47 horses who displayed their beauty, showcased their round shapes, long manes and struck a pose in front of the judges. The best stallions and mares fought for the coveted title of Overall Champion in beauty and movements.
Trabajo y Tradición: A Show of Skill and Passion
The entertainment continued with Trabajo y Tradición. Spectators enjoyed exceptional performances by Spain’s best riders; José Olea, Pepe Cívico, and Estefanía Bustos, who captivated the audience with their knowledge.
Learning from the Masters
Education was another cornerstone of IBERICON. Iberian Masters Academy featured a stellar lineup of Olympic Spanish riders, including José Daniel Martín Dockx, Claudio Castilla, and Juan Manuel Muñoz. Doina Fischer also led Classical Dressage sessions, while José Antonio Olea brought adrenaline to the arena with his Obstacle Training and the electrifying Exhibition Speed Class.
Heritage and Breeding Excellence
One of the most memorable presentations came from representatives of Yeguada La Cartuja, one of the oldest and most prestigious PRE studs in the world. They shared their centuries-old legacy, passion, and dedication to preserving the purity and excellence of the breed.
USPRE Week Joins IBERICON
Adding even more prestige to the event, the United States PRE Association (USPRE) hosted their USPRE Week during IBERICON. With initiatives designed for breeders, educational sessions such as round table , and the traditional welcome cocktail for members, USPRE’s participation reinforced its ongoing commitment to excellence and its mission as a bridge between Spain and the United States.
The excitement was palpable; a mix of nerves, pride, and pure adrenaline filled the air. The atmosphere was electric, and everywhere you looked, there were flowing manes, round shapes, and the beauty of our PRE mares and stallions.
At IBERICON, education was also a highlight — we had the very best of the best. Spanish Olympic riders such as 𝐉𝐨𝐬𝐞́ 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢́𝐧 𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐱, 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚, and 𝐉𝐮𝐚𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐌𝐮𝐧̃𝐨𝐳 shared their expertise, offering valuable advice and training insights during their masterclasses and clinics.
On Sunday, October 19th, the final Master Class of 𝐏𝐞𝐩𝐞 𝐂𝐢́𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐨 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐢́𝐚 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐬 was a deep dive into Spanish equestrian traditions.
From the traditional saddle and attire (traje de corto) to exploring the rich cultural heritage behind Spain’s riding tack.

Baroque Equestrian Games Schooling Show
NOVEMBER 4, 2023
Penmerryl Farm, Greenville, Virginia
On Saturday, November 4th, ERAHC hosted a Baroque Equestrian Games & Institute (BEGI) Schooling Show at picturesque Penmerryl Farm. The setting was simply fantastic, as Penmerryl is nestled at the foothills of the beautiful Blueridge Mountains in Greenville, Virginia. The weekend started and was capped off with a clinic with founders Bruno Gonzalez and Tina Veder. There were 11 horses in attendance to study and show off their skills for judge, Mr. Gonzalez.
From groundwork to classical patterns, to musical presentations, these diligent riders and their horses, performed the intricate patterns that had been designed specifically for the development of the Iberian horse. Some had studied this path for many years while others had only just started. It was the epitome of harmony and while watching, you can see how one movement was setup to follow the next into the culmination of movements at each level. What was striking was the kindness and flexibility that isn’t offered in a traditional dressage test.
Riders that were not very confident or if their horses weren’t quite sure of the judges stand (how many horses have we witnessed at competitions that wouldn’t get near a judges stand?!) were permitted to overcome their fears. There were many in attendance who had a brief introduction at our Educational Symposium Day that were able to see deeper into what BEGI was all about.
After the competition we gathered for hot cider or a glass of wine around the warm and glowing firepit for some fun camaraderie and sharing of the great day we all had. ERAHC looks forward to hosting more events for our members as a viable avenue to train their Iberian horses. For more information about the upcoming BEGI clinics, contact Lonnie Bates at piaffe101@gmail.com or contact Susan Hart at susanhart@mebtel.net.

ANNOUNCEMENT
Mar 24: New Website in beta test now!
___________________________________
We have launched the new and improved website which is under development. The goal is to focus on our members and breathe a renewed vitality into the club, now in our 31st year.
The website will be an essential tool and will offer multiple avenues to attract interest in what the ERAHC is about – OUR MEMBERS. We hope to increase the engagement between members and attract new visitors to the site.
We are in process of creating a video library, a photo gallery, and features such as a Breeder Spotlight, a Trainer Spotlight, a classified section and regular updates with news and events. There is also a new private section for members in the works.
Our hope is to unite our members and share our common passion with the amazing Iberian horses and also discover your other interests and endeavors thru this new portal.
We are in beta test mode now - so if you would, kindly explore the site and email the webmaster if you find any glitches.
You can create your log in member profile, add a banner image and avatar, news and announcements, a classified notice, etc. Please do so at your earliest convenience.
Also you can send video links and photos for the gallery section. Share your farm news and new arrivals. If you need help or wish to provide feedback, email our webmaster, Ambrosia Design Studio.
Also, if you have not yet renewed your membership for 2023, please consider doing so under the tab “JOIN US”:
